Missing Titanic sub update - James Cameron says US knew implosion happened hours after it lost contact
Following the discovery that the Titan submarine collapsed close to the location of the wreckage, all five of the crew members were ruled dead, police said on Thursday.
Hollywood director James Cameron said that within 24 hours after the submersible's disappearance, he learned that it had collapsed when it lost contact with its mothership.
The 1997 Oscar-winning filmmaker of Titanic claimed that the past week had "felt like a prolonged and nightmarish charade" after receiving evidence of a "loud bang" in less than an hour.
After the Wall Street Journal revealed that the Titan sub's implosion was discovered a few days ago by US Navy underwater microphones, he made his remark.
Among those on board the Titan were Pakistani millionaire Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son Suleman, British billionaire Hamish Harding, renowned French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and founder and CEO of Expeditions Stockton Rush.
The OceanGate Expeditions submersible was quickly searched for using a top-secret acoustic detection equipment after it was reported missing on Sunday, a US Defense source said.
